Plans to move Czech embassy to Jerusalem

An Israeli newspaper, The Jerusalem Post, finally noticed the current visit of the Czech president Miloš Zeman to Israel.

The article describes some of the actual depth of the Czechoslovak and Czech support for the Jewish state. The new Czech president – who has always been comparing Arafat to Hitler and who recommended the NATO to invite Israel and redefine the purpose of the organization as a group fighting against the Islamic Anticivilization, an empire stretching from Northern Africa through Indonesia that is partly funded by oil and partly by drugs – made the proposal to move the Czech embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem a few days ago.

While the Prague Castle and the technocratic Czech government in resignation tried to soften the impact of the claims, it's plausible that Zeman will reiterate his ideas about the embassy tomorrow or soon afterwards. His visit began today and it will last for 4 days.

Note that Italy was close to moving its embassy to Jerusalem but there's just a general consulate over there while the embassy stayed in Tel Aviv, just like other embassies. Similarly, the U.S. Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995 but presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama agreed that it's not a business of the Congress to decide about similar matters so the bill hasn't come into force de facto. Only Italy and U.S. have consulates in Jerusalem; Bolivia and Paraguay are the only countries that have embassies in Jerusalem (suburbs).

It's somewhat more likely that Czechia would actually act and move the embassy to the city that Israel considers its own capital. But the whole plan may turn out to be nothing more than a rhetorical exercise and theater of our president that may at most strengthen the morale of the Israeli.

This boring low-key building in Tel Aviv doesn't necessarily reflect the importance of the Czech-Israeli ties.

The Palestinians have protested against Zeman's words. That includes the Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat who claimed that the Czech Republic would undermine the peace process by this relocation. That's a bizarre statement given the fact that pretty much all the people claiming to work on the peace process in the region publicly agree that at least a part of Jerusalem should always remain under the control of the Jewish state and a third country is simply trying to move the embassy to an agreed upon place that the host country considers more appropriate for such buildings.

But maybe some people aren't sincere when they say that they actually want to preserve any Jewish control anywhere in Jerusalem. Or anywhere in the Middle East, for that matter.

If this proposal is verbatum I propose you Czechs elect a different president! :-D

I wish I could believe that Zeman really meant what he says, but I don't. When Havel said similar things (and that includes his very open and public support for the independence of Taiwan - a lot more daring proposal than this one of Zeman's) he really meant it and everyone knew that he meant it. Havel was a bit of a dreamer and a moralist but he was unique among politicians in that he always meant what he said in public (Mrs Thatcher was close to that but not quite there).

But I believe Zeman is doing exactly the same thing that so many American presidential candidates have done in the past: making exactly the same proposal as long as they had no power to implement it only to go back on their word the moment they had. A kind of cross between populism and Realpolitik. But one thing that I am very impressed with is that Zeman clearly believes that saying such things will make him more and not less popular in Czechia. And if he is right, that from my point of view, that is says something very good about the Czech people, which is exactly why the Czech Republic is my favourite country in Europe.

Good , let israel gradually expel all arabs from jerusalem , destroy their sacred places and expel them from the lands of their fathers , then announce jerusalem as the permanent capital of the all-jews state israel . And then they cry when the terrorist arabs attack ! lol

reader Luboš Motl said...

Dear Bill, the terrorists are attacking anyway and given your condition, the attacks would be harder for them and the defense would actually be more efficient than it is now.

At any rate, Israel is actually doing none of the combative things you are trying to connect the country with. It allows citizenship for other ethnic groups, is more lovely in caring about the cultural heritage of other groups than its own than any other nation in the region, and isn't expelling anyone.

This response only shows your stupidity or hypocrisy . Read the history , Israel occupied an Arab land based on biblical texts , because god promised them this land .This was their excuse for stealing the land from Arabs and expelling them from their homes . What about killing palestinians and occupying the sinai peninsula ,the Golan heights in the six world war ? They are no less terrorists than Al Qaeda and ben laden . You seem to be disconnected from reality , Read history please !

Were Egyptians who tried to get sinai back in yom kippur war terrorists ? Or were israelis the terrorists when they captured sinai in the six days war ?

The sickening disingenuousness of your comment becomes apparent if one contrasts the treatment of Arabs in Israel, where they have full civil rights and encouraged to study at the most elite institutions such as the Technion (20 percent of the students are Arabs) and the official line of the Palestinian Authority, which is that no Jews of any kind will be allowed to remain in the Palestinian State after its establishment:

Yes, the Egyptians and their interests at the Sinai Peninsula were targeted during the Six-Day War *exactly* because they were committing terrorist attacks against Israeli targets.

Can't you read some easily accessible source, e.g. Wikipedia, instead of asking these elementary questions here on a physics blog?

I think that God - the same God underlying all branches of the Western religions - who promised a small piece of land to a nation where they moved thousands of years ago is a damn good reason for this ethnic group to recapture the territory, especially after an era of the history in which others have stripped them of all other territories.

You had three strikes within an hour, I am adding you on the black list.

lol ! So what you're saying is that it's legitimate to capture a land because some clergyman wrote a book claiming that what he calls 'god' gave them the right to own a land !The same clergyman and his peers wrote in the same book that it's right to kill the children of the enemies of jews etc. They are terrorists by all standards..And I don't mind if you add me to the blacklist . Your blog is a pathetic load of shit anyway and I don't consider the trivial pieces of information in physics here worth my time .

Zionist israelis are terrorists . They depend on assasination of the enemies and terrorism to achieve their goals . You , being a moron , can't admit that israel is an aggressive country .

I would not have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes, but it seems that TRF attracts crackpots (of various kinds) like a flame attracts moths and flies.

In the past, the Israelis acted as terrorists, at least some groups like Irgun - bombing of King David, Deir Yassin massacre. And out of Irgun the current right-wing zionist party Likud evolved. Here some current terrorist zionist groups

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_religious_terrorism#After_the_creation_of_Israel

And an ancient text like the Old Testament is hardly any reason for anything, it has no place in the modern world. Any state that did not separate itself from religion belongs to the Middle Ages. The Germans could say that they inhabited the Czech lands before the arrival of the Slavs and they want the land back. The name Bohemia comes from the German tribe of Boia

And I want to add one more thing. I am not against Israel, I am not against Jews, and I am not agaist Arabs or Palestinians. I would wish for a happy solution for all the involved parties and for the violence to end. I am sure there are good-willed people on both sides and there are militaristic bigots responsible for countless suffering on both sides. I would wish for a palestinian state and for peace.
The comment above is meant as a counterbalance only. If there were another blog denigrating the Jews and gloryfying Arabs, I would be on the other side
